Miscarriage Symptoms
A miscarriage, not thoroughly understood, is an disheartening
experience. When a woman has a first-trimester miscarriage, her health care
provider often cannot determine the cause. However, most miscarriages occur when
a pregnancy is not developing normally. Usually, there is nothing a woman or her
provider can do to prevent it.
Early symptoms of a miscarriage include:
- Fluid or tissue passing from the vagina
- Vaginal spotting or bleeding
- Pain or cramping in your abdomen or lower back
Vaginal bleeding is the warning sign that precedes nearly all pregnancy
losses. However, vaginal bleeding doesn't always signal a miscarriage. Up to 40
percent of all pregnant women experience bleeding at some point during
pregnancy. Of these women, about half will have a miscarriage.
Most miscarriages happen because the fertilized egg in the uterus does not
develop normally. This is related to the genetic material (genes and
chromosomes) of the fetus. A miscarriage is not caused by exercise or sexual
intercourse during pregnancy .
