Pericarditis Symptoms
When pericarditis symptoms occur, an infection has reached the pericardium
and that causes the tissue to swell around the heart and can lead to potentially
life threatening complications if left untreated. There are many things that can
cause pericarditis symptoms to occur, and it often strikes people who have had
recent illnesses or surgery. It can also strike after a bout with the flu or a
bacterial infection. There are certain medications that may also trigger
pericarditis symptoms such as medication for hypertension, seizures penicillin,
and radiation therapy.
Symptoms of Pericarditis may include:
- A sharp pain in the center of the chest just under the sternum that can
extend up and over the left shoulder and into the neck and back. This is the
most common symptom of Pericarditis.
- Pain can extend to just below the rib cage
- Pain when taking a deep breath
- Pain when lying down
- Pain when swallowing
- Low grade fever
- Weakness
- Fatigue
- Feeling lightheaded
- Shortness of breath
- Muscle aches
- Coughing
- Hiccups
If you experience any of the above symptoms your medical personnel may ask
you for your medical history as well as your families, and also what types of
medication you may be taking. Doctors may also order an electrocardiogram to
determine if your symptoms are associated with this illness. It is important
that you give honest and complete answers for proper diagnoses.
Pericarditis and it symptoms are usually not a life threatening disease.
However, if left untreated the pain will worsen and complication can arise that
may become life threatening.
Symptoms of pericarditis can mimic many different illness related symptoms and
can only be diagnosed by a medical professional. It is critical that you seek
medical attention if you have pericarditis symptoms associated with any type of
chest pain.
